Queen and Slim - Film Review

This is the seventh film I watched during lockdown.

'Queen and Slim' is a film following 2 fugitives, Queen and Slim, who are on the run from the law after being pulled over for a minor traffic offense escalating to a policeman being shot by Slim, in self-defense. This film is incredibly relevant today when police brutality is constantly occurring and many black people are unlawfully killed by police officers.

The film follows Queen and Slim after they flee the scene when Slim shoots a police officer in self-defense and we follow their journey as they try to get to Cuba. The directing of this film, directed by Melina Matsoukas, is incredible, showing the emotional states of the protagonists and focuses on them, whilst indirectly showing what is happening in the background.
During the film there is drama, from the tension of whether Queen and Slim be caught? A budding romance as Queen and Slim get to know each other better whilst on the run and crime, as some scenes depict protests supporting Queen and Slim and how the peaceful protests escalate, as well as Queen and Slim being fugitives.

10/10 - I really recommend this film, especially as the scene where Slim acts in self-defense, showing how that was an unnecessary situation but does occur everyday. The film has beautiful cinematography, and the development relationship between the protagonists from their first date to the end of the film is amazing to watch.
