Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry ~ Book Review

This is the story of a little prince who decides he wants to make friends and visit other places, other than his little planet.  On his travels he meets many people and finds many things. The story is narrated by a Pilot, whose motor breaks in the middle of a desert, this is when he meets the Little Prince. Each of the characters in the story seem so unrealistic that they seem absurd which makes children want to read on and adults to think about what this means.

The story is dedicated to children and adults, and from the beginning he explains that the story can always have more than one meaning. If you read very slowly and read between lines, for example you will find the author is describing love using images. This is explained by the little prince falls in love with a rose but when he finds all the other roses that are exactly the same as his rose; he feels that his rose lied to him about being unique. When he meets the fox, the fox tells him that his rose still is unique as it is his rose and the rose he loves.
My favourite character is the fox. I like the fox as it explains that no matter if we look the same that we are all unique and that friendship is something we cherish. The fox says that to have friendship we must tame each other, he explains that by taming each other that a friendship is slowly binding together, also the fox explains the concept of love as when someone or something we love goes away, we cry as they are close to us and we are sad that they are gone.
I liked that without realising it the author describes aspects of life. I also liked that the chapters describe different points of view of each character, what they think of the little prince and how they would describe him, it then ends with what the little prince thinks. The little stories make the pilot reflect on what’s happening currently in his life. Sometimes it felt as though the author was telling the story himself. I didn’t like that not very much went on at some places making the chapters seem very long.
This book is considered a classic because everyone can enjoy it, for the children there are funny and strange characters which grasps their attention, whereas for the adults they can have a clearer image of what is going on. The story has many themes, for example when the Little Prince meets the rose the theme is love, when he meets the fox the theme is friendship, etc. The book has been enjoyed by many generations, as my grandparents have read it, so have my parents and I have too. It helps you understand the world around you as in the chapter of the lighter of the lamp, this helps you to understand that this character is absurd and would never exist nowadays, and we need to think before we do something, sometimes if the instructions we are given really need to be followed but what happens when we don’t follow them. Additionally adults will see a child asking questions but not understanding the answers given to them so this makes them think of how they should talk to children.

I recommend this book to anyone because it has interesting characters and helps you to think more of what we do and makes you think of what we do. It is an easy book to read because the language is easy and the story is very well set out.  This book for all ages. I rate this book 8/10 because I personally didn’t find it very interesting as I prefer to read fantasy, mystery and romantic comedies.
