Pig Heart Boy by Malorie Blackman~ Book Review

The story is of a 13 year old boy (Cameron) who has heart failure. When he is offered the chance to get a new heart, of course he jumps at the opportunity; but a heart that is from a pig? Cameron would be the first person to ever have a pig heart transplant. The transplant may have a side effect that Cameron’s body might reject his new heart. The book explains Cameron’s thought and feelings as well as the book is set into different sections “cause”, “effect” and “consequences”. In the first section, it explains that Cameron knows he’s dying but doesn't know if someday he will get a human heart transplant and be able to swim and play football with his friends again. The second section explores, how Cameron, his mother and his father reacted to having a pig heart transplant and the process of it. The last one considers what the side effect of the pig heart was and the new opportunities, now that everyone knows that Cameron has a pig heart.

The main character is Cameron but the story also focuses a lot on others as well. For example Julie, Cameron’s friend who he has never had to confidence to ask out, the book explains what Julie felt before the transplant and then when she found out it was a pig hearts it explains how she reacted.

I liked the story as unlike the other stories where a young teenager is ill, this story explains how other felt but without taking all the attention of Cameron so you get someone else’s point of view. The story also connects with the audience especially near the end when his grandmother dies and what happens as a consequence to the new heart.

didn't like that when Cameron spoke to his unborn sister or brother that someone’s I found it went on too long for me but this did make the characters feelings more realistic.

I would rate this book 9/10 because it connects with the reader and shows you how it feels to only have a few months left to live but be given such a fantastic opportunity. I haven’t rated it 10/10 because as I said I thought that when Cameron talks to his unborn brother or sister, it goes on too long for me personally. I recommend this book to teenagers mainly but this is a good story for anyone.
