A Day trip to Dresden

Dresden is the capital of Saxony and is roughly an hour to 1.5 hours from Leipzig by train, ideal for a day trip away! You can also go by coach or car and this will take around 1 hour and a half, which is a cheaper option. I went to Dresden in September on a weekend trip away.
I got this image from international food blog from their blog on Hamburg. Dresden is a beautiful city with an incredibly rich history! Dresden was severely bombed during world war two and most buildings in the old town were destroyed, however the city decided to reconstruct all new buildings exactly as they looked before.
As you can see in the picture above of the Frauenkirche, some of the original bricks were even used! You can tell by the different colour bricks. Scientists calculated exactly where those bricks had originally been and the bricks were placed where they would have originally been. The Frauenkirche is now a protest Cathedral but was originally Catholic. The change of religion occurred during the reformation. I highly recommend having a walking tour of the old town to find out more about the city and its history. I went to the tourist information office and booked a guided tour in English, however it is also possible to have a tour in German.
I also recommend going to the Zwinger, which is also in the old town and can be seen on your walking tour. The picture above shows the stunning court yard of the Zwinger. Unfortunately due to COVID we were unable to enter the museum, however from the outside there is a lot to see. The Zwinger was built to show how much wealth the king had and this beautiful building and court yard show this.
As you can see in the picture above Dresden is still under construction, however this does not largely affect the view. I recommend going over the bridge from the main town to the new town. In the new town there is a market every Saturday, as well as many live musician playing a variety of different genres. A COVID seriously affected the music industry and tourism, Dresden decided to create live music spaces for musicians to play, I am unsure whether this is still possible under the current lockdown rules. I would love to go back to Dresden one day and explore more. Dresden is such an interesting city and I would love to explore more of the new town next time!
